A major ice storm hit northwest Arkansas on Monday and Tuesday. It is estimated that many areas have 80-90 percent of households without power and that it could take 2 days to a week to restore power.  The ice was up to 1  1/2 inches thick and snapped trees like they were toothpicks.  Though they snaped like toothpicks the sounds ranged from gunfire to heavy artillery as branches and entire trees continued to fall.

My son Matt and I made a trip to one of the worst hit areas to take photos.  Just after we left Fort Smith the heater on my truck quit heating (well at least we did not have to wory about condensation on the cameras).  Although this is a terrible disaster there is still beauty to be seen from the ice.

Great Places for Great Photos

Let me help you to find a great location for your next photography adventure.  I will list many lesser-known destinations, as well as the famous "Icon Locations" for photography.  I will provide photos (Lots of Photos), location information, consisting of what there is to photograph as well as other information about the destination.  I will give costs, maps, directions, contact information, and other essential information for a successful photo trip.  I will only post for locations that I have personally photographed to ensure a quality guide to great locations for photography. If you know of great places that are not posted, please send me the details, I may just decide that is a place I need to go!

Greg Disch is a freelance photographer located in Arkansas. Greg specializes in nature, scenic, wildlife, and other outdoor subjects in Arkansas and other areas of the country.  Most of the images on this site are available for sale as prints, personal use, or rights managed stock photos.

Greg offers both classroom instruction and in the field hands on photographic workshops. Classroom sessions are normally held in Fort Smith Arkansas, but arrangements can be made to bring a class to your group.

All classes and workshops have small class sizes designed to provide an optimum student to instructor ratio, where you can get the personal attention, you need.  Most classes and workshops are limited to a maximum of six participants and will be held with a minimum of only two.

If you are looking for a wonderful opportunity to get personal individual instruction, I do private workshops and classes at a location of your choice, whether doing a location photo shoot, coming to your home or business, traveling across the country on a road trip, or at my classroom.  This is a fantastic way to learn digital workflow and be sure that your computer equipment is properly configured for optimum performance.

  1. These photos are absolutey beautiful. You’re right…this has been a terrible disaster, yet there is so much beauty everywhere you look.

I copied one of your photos to my personal blog. I credited you for taking the photo (and provided a link to your blog), but if you’d rather I remove the photo, please let me know.

    Thank you and stay safe!

  2. These are really good photos. I especially like the one with the tree that looks like it was snapped like a toothpick. It appears that the picture is a dream world…really surreal.
My dad lives in Flippin, and he is one of the many without power. I was curious to see how far this storm hit…to my surprise it is more widespread than what I first was told. My dad only thinks that the towns around him are without power. I have not had the opportunity to speak with him tonight to tell him that he may be without power for more time than he thinks. I wish you all well and a speedy warm up out there. I am in Colorado…the storm hit here a few days ago, but only brought snow and really cold temperatures. I do not envy you at all.
I do like your photos…I am an aspiring photographer. I am still learning about the camera that was bought for me a little over a year ago. I take a lot of nature pics.
