Lunar Eclipse Photos

In the early hours of the morning on Tuesday December 21st 2010 there was a total lunar Eclipse, the only one for the year and there will not be another until 2014. The total eclipse lasted for 72 minutes and during that time the moon turned red. This is caused by a phenomenon similar to the effect that causes our sunsets to turn the sky red. The light is passing through the Earths atmosphere and indirectly lighting the moon. If you are interested in all of the technical information on the event Click Here.

A composite image of the progress of the eclipse, for the final image with the red full moon, the exposure was increased from f/5.6 at 1/250 sec. at ISO 400 in the previous exposures to 1.0 sec. at f/5.6 ISO 1600 to bring out the detail of the moon.
