In Pursuit of the Sunrise – Sunset – Greg Disch Photography

I was in Glacier National Park on Tuesday and made plans to get up early (5:00 am) and make the 2.5 hour trip to Many Glacier to photograph the sunrise illuminating Grinnell Peak. As we drove the sky was looking fantastic with a clear sky to the east and nice clouds to the west, the closer we got the better the chances looked for a great colorful sunrise. The situation changed quickly as we approached and when we arrived it was cold windy and a very dark gloomy sky.

I was determined to get a shot from the trip, so I decided to make a timelapse video showing the clouds moving through. I set up my timer remote, pushed start watched it countdown and then nothing, started counting down again and nothing. The cable seemed to be shorted and it would not trigger the camera. Not to be deterred I manually shot a frame every 8 seconds for about 45 minutes and the results are below.

Later that evening the storm had passed through and the sky cleared with nice clouds and what looked like a chance for colorful sunset. We found a great location on Lake McDonald, the water became perfectly still and it looked like there would be a very nice sunset. Again things changed quickly just at the last minute and everything turned blue, not a great sunset, but a very nice photo.
